Florence Nakiwala\nKiyingi, has met with a team of Egyptian investors who have expressed interest\nto establish value addition plants for coffee in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\na meeting held at Radisson Blu hotel in the Egyptian capital, Cairo on\nThursday, the chairman Mac Optic Investment, Dr. Ahmed Radwan noted that the\ntaste of Ugandan coffee is undisputedly world acclaimed and they would love to\nestablish local processing plants in Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\nare very interested in investing in the value-addition of the Ugandan coffee\nsector because we trust our resources, abilities, ideas, plans and projects\nsince we have the best experts in their own fields to reach the highest\nstandards,\u201d. Radwan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With\na tagline; \u201cwe build the future\u201d, Mac Optic Investment runs a strong chain of\nfood &amp; beverage plants with more than 20 projects around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncompany also has investments in the hospitality sector with luxury villas and\napartments in Greece, in Egypt they own the Mac Oil refinery and Petrochemicals\nCompany, which boasts the largest refining capacity in Egypt of an estimated\ncapacity of 250,000 barrels per day, Mac gas and they are about to establish\ntwo Power Plants with 225 megawatt each, for industrial supply purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nnearby South Sudan, the company holds licenses for two oil concession areas while\nin Sudan they own cement and sugar plants. They also have presence in Bulgaria,\nSerbia, Cyprus, Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radwan\nrevealed to Minister Nakiwala that they seek to increase their presence across\nthe globe from the current 18 offices to 30 by 2020, and Uganda remains a key\ntarget area for them because of its reknown coffee production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nakiwala\npledged to support the company establish in Uganda noting that the coffee\nindustry has grown stronger over the years due to deliberate programmes by the\nGovernment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\nrevealed that Uganda remains among the largest producing and exporting\ncountries of coffee in the world. Coffee is also celebrated as Uganda\u2019s third\nforeign exchange earner after tourism and remittances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently,\nUganda produces about 4.6 million 60-kilogramme-bags of coffee annually while\nBrazil, which is the world\u2019s leading producer, churns out between 55 and 60\nmillion sixty-kilogramme-bags annually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Uganda\u2019s\nproduction increased from 2.7 million 60-kilogramme-bags of coffee that were\nregistered in the financial year 2011\/12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radwan\nadded that their investment would extend to agricultural extension to build on\nyields and handling of the harvest for quality purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nmeeting was attended by Uganda\u2019s Ambassador to Egypt, Sam Sebuliba, who\ncommended the resolutions reached saying it would go a long way in\nstrengthening the already flourishing trade and other lines of relationships\nbetween Uganda and Egypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nMinister and her team were also taken on a guided tour of some of Mac Optic\nInvestment\u2019s plants in Cairo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, Hon.
