The Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), George William Thembo Nyombi, has emphasized the seriousness of data billing and usage integrity issues, shedding light on ongoing investigations into the matter.
Nyombi’s comments come as a section of Ugandans on social media initiated an online exhibition called #datatheftexhibition.
Numerous Ugandans, including prominent celebrities, have expressed dissatisfaction with certain telecommunications companies, citing a lack of satisfactory explanations for the rapid depletion of their data GBs within a few hours.
Nyombi stated that data billing and usage integrity issues are a major concern, emphasizing the urgent need for attention to this problem.
As per Nyombi’s statement, investigations have uncovered various factors contributing to the widespread problem of data billing and usage integrity issues.
“Data billing and usage integrity issues are a significant concern,” Nyombi stated, highlighting the importance of addressing the matter promptly.
Consumer-related scenarios, as outlined by Nyombi, encompass a range of issues, including automatic downloads and ad-heavy content, all of which contribute to unexpected data usage.
Nyombi stressed the need for consumers to take proactive measures in addressing these challenges, reiterating, “Data billing and usage integrity issues are a significant concern.”
Regarding network-related scenarios, Nyombi emphasized the significance of accurate data metering and transparency from service providers, echoing the sentiment that “Data billing and usage integrity issues are a significant concern.”
Nyombi called for cooperation among consumers, service providers, and regulatory bodies, reiterating the importance of collective action to identify vulnerabilities and implement effective solutions.
In February of this year, singer Moses Ssali, known as Bebe Cool, threatened to sue Airtel Uganda, a telecommunications company, after 22GB of data from his mobile phone number was depleted within a short span of time, despite not using the data.
Another singer, Priscilla Zawedde, also known as Azawi, recently put pressure on Airtel regarding the same issue. She revealed that 22GB of data she had purchased had expired within two days, despite not streaming anything.
