The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and eBee Uganda have joined forces to promote sustainable urban transportation through the introduction of the Kampala Cycling Day.
This monthly community initiative aims to inspire people to embrace cycling as a zero-emission mode of transport, aligning with the city’s vision of transforming into a greener and healthier Kampala Smart City.
The inaugural Kampala Cycling Day commenced today, attracting a diverse group of cyclists, including residents, stakeholders, Fun Cycling Uganda, and representatives from eBee Uganda. eBee Uganda, an African e-mobility company located at Industrial Area Plot 9, Old Portbell Road, has been instrumental in advancing our smart city agenda by providing electric bicycles that offer a smart and sustainable means of transportation.
The event began at City Hall, with more than 70 cyclists participating in a symbolic ride through the city streets.
A notable highlight of the cycling event was the presence of electric bicycles, symbolizing a commitment to clean energy solutions in response to Kampala’s persistent pollution and poor air quality issues.
The use of electric bicycles not only promotes environmental sustainability but also provides a practical alternative for commuters.
During the event, Engineer Irene Namuyiga, the Road Safety Expert at KCCA, emphasized the importance of cycling as a sustainable and clean mode of transport.
She announced that the Kampala Cycling Day would be a recurring event held on the last Friday of each month, with the next event scheduled for April 22.
Engineer Namuyiga also reaffirmed KCCA’s dedication to improving infrastructure to support cycling, including the development of a Non-Motorized Transport corridor from Luwumu Street to Namirembe Road and the implementation of bicycle lanes throughout the city.
“Cycling is more than just a means of transportation; it promotes a healthier lifestyle, reduces emissions, and creates a more livable city,” Engineer Namuyiga stated, encouraging more residents to embrace cycling as a viable mode of travel.
The Kampala Cycling Day represents a collaborative effort involving KCCA, stakeholders, and the community to foster sustainable transportation practices and pave the way for a cleaner, greener Kampala.
