Over 140 suspected criminals were arrested over the weekend in Nsangi, within Kyengera town council, Wakiso district, by the Flying Squad and the army.
Targeting neighbourhoods including Kitemu (also known as Benghazi), Nakasozi (also known as Geyena), and others, this intelligence-led operation was spearheaded by the army, Kampala Metropolitan South Police, and the Flying Squad.
It addressed many reports of home invasions.
Munyagwa Mubarak, a former legislator from Kawempe South, also had his home targeted by a string of robberies.
His security guard is still in the hospital recovering from head injuries he suffered in an attack late Tuesday night.
Around 2:00 am, according to police reports, machete-wielding attackers broke into Munyagwa’s home in Kimbejja Cell, Budo ward, Kyengera town council, seriously injuring his security officer, Benjamin Mpaka.
The Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, emphasized the collaborative operations that led to the arrest of 145 suspected offenders, 39 of whom locals had recognized as severe criminals.
106 suspects were released after warnings. The goal of the current operations is to end the increased criminal activity in these locations.
“We want you to know that these operations are only getting started, and we aim to get rid of the crooks who are scaring people in this area day and night. This week, a few suspects will appear in court,” Owoyesigyire stressed.
There were 6,854 recorded robberies in the 2022 crime report as opposed to 5,275 in the 2021 report. Of them, 4,338 cases featured no weapons at all, whereas 2,516 cases involved deadly weapons like machetes and rifles.
