A 24-year-old man in Namisindwa district died in a challenge to drink 12 bottles of Kakasa Kombucha drink, an alcohol brand from Kenya.
The deceased has been identified as Rober Welikhe, a resident of Sikhendu village, Sikhendu parish, Bukiabi sub-county.
Michael Koyi, one of the residents, says that the competition was organized by Augustus Wete, one of the local traders in the Riverside trading centre in Bukiabi Sub County.
He explained that Wete staked Uganda Shillings 10,000 for whoever would down 12 bottles of Kakasa Kombucha drink.
According to Koyi, Welikhe took on the challenge since he has been a known drinker in the area. He explains that all was well until Welikhe reached the 8th bottle.
He collapsed and was released from his mouth and nose, prompting residents to rush him to Lwakhakha Mercy Clinic for treatment, but he died on the way.
Nicolas Soita, the Bukiabi Sub County LC III chairperson, confirmed the incident, saying that they are hunting for Wete and those who were behind the competition.
Angry locals had dumped the deceased’s body at Wete’s home by the time of filing this story.
