The Police in Gulu City have arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly killing her mother after being denied food.
The suspect was identified by police as Dickson Okane while the deceased is 48-year-old Betty Adoch all residents of Bar Cell, Pece Laroo division in Gulu city.
Police reported that the suspect used an axe to hit her mother’s head thrice on Sunday night after he was reportedly denied food.
Preliminary police investigation indicates the suspect returned home at about 11 pm on Sunday from a bar while drunk and asked her mother to serve him food but his request wasn’t immediately granted.
Okane who seemed impatient according to police reportedly grabbed a plate and went on to serve himself forcefully but was stopped by his mother prompting an altercation.
He reportedly went and picked an axe in anger which he later used to hit her mother’s head thrice leaving her unconscious.
Aswa West Region Police Spokesperson David Ongom Mudong noted in a statement on Monday that the victim of the assault was rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital but succumbed to injuries.
Mudong condemned the suspect’s action which he says was influenced by the use of drugs adding that alcohol and drug abuse was leading to an increase in homicide cases in the sub-region.
He notes that the Police have recovered an axe used in the murder which is currently being kept as an exhibit.
The suspect, according to Mudong is being detained at Gulu City East Division Police Station where a case of murder vide CRB 361/2023 has since been registered pending investigation.
According to the 2022 Annual Police Crime Report, the Aswa River Region registered a total of 216 homicide cases and ranked sixth among the regions with the highest number of homicide cases in the country.
