According to President Yoweri Museveni, Ugandan police stopped a well-known Islamist militant group from bombing churches.
According to Mr. Museveni on X, formerly Twitter, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) planned to plant two bombs in churches on Sunday in Kibibi, which is located around 50 km (30 miles) from the capital Kampala.
However, he continued, “the devices were reported to police and defused.”
According to the president, the devices were given to nearby pastors and disguised as PA systems. He claimed that watchful members of the public had reported them.
Mr. Museveni announced earlier that day that four ADF locations in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of the Congo had been targeted by airstrikes by Ugandan soldiers.
“It appears a significant amount of terrorists were eliminated,” the president declared.
“They are re-entering Uganda and trying to commit some random terrorist acts,” he threatened, referring to the fleeing ADF.
42 people were slain by ADF militants in June, including 37 students at a high school in western Uganda close to the DR Congo border.
It was one of the nation’s deadliest strikes by the ADF.
Below is Museveni’s full message
Fellow Ugandans, especially the Bazzukulu.
Musibiire-gye- musiibye-mutya (good afternoon) Further to my morning message about the devastating attacks our Air-force carried out against ADF in Congo yesterday, today, through popular vigilance (Wanainchi Kuwa macho), two bombs which the remnants from Congo were planning to plant in churches in Kibibi, Butambala, were reported to the Police and defused.
The Police is working to establish the exact identity of the individuals involved.
We shall get them wherever they go: Congo, Uganda, South Africa, or wherever they go. Wanainchi be vigilant.
Report strangers.
Do not accept gifts from strangers. In Kibibi, the pastors had been sent public address systems linked to bombs.
However, the Wanainchi were suspicious and reported.
The evil plan was foiled, thanks to everybody.
Signed: Yoweri K. Museveni Gen. (Rtd) Ssaabalwanyi
