Muhammuddu Iddi Zingo, 62, also known as Taata Medi, has been sent to Luzira prison on suspicion of aggravated defiling his three grandchildren, according to the Kampala Capital City Hall Court.
On Wednesday, Zingo was arraigned before a judge presided over by Grade One Magistrate Jane Tibagozenka for the purpose of entering a plea.
Zingo is accused of defiling and infecting three, six, and nine-year-old children with HIV.
The court has been informed that Zingo, a resident of Namuli zone in Bukoto Kampala Central, engaged in illicit sexual activity with the three females between March 2020 and 2022 while being aware of his HIV status.
Zingo, however, has not been given the opportunity to respond to the accusations made against him because the City Hall Magistrate lacks the authority to hear the case of aggravated defilement because it is a capital offense.
The Magistrate has advised him that the High Court, which has the authority to give him bail if he so desires to seek for it, can hear such charges and try them.
Although the inquiry is ongoing, Zingo has been detained until April 26th, 2023.
A charge of serious defilement has a potential sentence of the death penalty, according to the penal code act.
Around 8,960 cases of defilement were reported to police nationwide in 2022 compared to 10,653 cases in 2021, according to the Annual Crime Report of Police, which was released a month ago.
