A 22-year-old man was on Thursday evening remanded to Kanungu government prison on allegations of homosexuality.
Davis Orikiriza, a businessman and resident of Katungu village, Eastern Ward, Kambuga town council, Kanungu district is allegedly to have had canal knowledge with a fellow man on March 22,2023.
Appearing before court, Orikiriza was charged with engaging in un natural offence (homosexuality) contrary to section 145 of the penal code act.
He pleaded not guilty.
Peter Muhendo, Kanungu District Resident State Attorney asked for an adjournment saying that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
Athananthious Mukobi, Kanungu Grade One Magistrate tasked Orikiriza to explain where he attained training in such an act from, but the suspect kept on refuting the accusations. Mukobi remanded him until April 6,2023.
Ugandan parliament early March 2023 passed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023 that criminalizes more Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer– LGBTQ activities.
Under this new law, people who publicly declare that they belong to the LGBTQ community face between 2-10 years imprisonment for engaging in homosexuality, while aggravated homosexuality fetches the highest penalty.
