Under the president’s orders, the Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID and Statehouse Anti-Corruption Unit have assembled a joint team to swiftly investigate the alleged theft of Karamoja relief iron sheets.
The diversion of relief supplies purchased for the region has caused a storm to rage around the Karamoja Ministry, which is housed within the Office of the Prime Minister-OPM.
Top government leaders, including ministers, shared the iron sheets.
The Karamoja Parliamentary Group recently formally wrote to the Clerk to Parliament to inform him of their intention to submit a notice of motion for the censure of Mary Gorreti Kitutu, the minister responsible for Karamoja Affairs.
Despite the fact that the scandal has been investigated by the Presidential and Foreign Affairs Committee, which is chaired by Adjumani District Woman Member of Parliament Jesca Ababiku, police investigators and the Statehouse House Anti-corruption unit have also formed a team to conduct a joint investigation.
According to Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga, they were given the go-ahead to widen their investigations into the suspected theft of iron sheets in Karamoja by the Director of Public Prosecution, or DPP, who was also given a directive by the President.
“The joint task team, which is based at the Kibuli Police Headquarters, will include detectives from the CID, Statehouse anti-corruption, and officers from the office of the DPP. Its mission is to conduct a second investigation and compare its findings to those of the parliamentary committee, which is currently conducting its own.”
Enanga indicates that all the suspects will be called at any point as part of the investigations, which will be extending what has already been uncovered in this case.
“We’re meeting all those suspected to be involved in this scandal. This is all done as efforts by the government to fight corruption. We shall be availing the updates in regard to these investigations which are kicking off this week,” Enanga noted.
The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, the Finance Minister, Matia Kasaija, his Junior Minister, Amos Lugoloobi, the Karamoja Affairs Minister, Mary Gorreti Kitutu, and her Junior Agnes Nandutu are just a few of the prominent people who have since been named in the iron sheet scandal.
