Koboko Municipality Lawmaker, Dr Charles Ayume is in the island nation of Cuba where he is leading a group of parliamentarians.
Dr Ayume is head of the delegation of Uganda Parliament’s Health Committee that he chairs. They are in Havana to attend the 4th International Health Conference ¨Cuba-Health 2022¨, held at the Havana International Conference Center (HICC) and attended by delegates from over 60 nations.
Cuba-Health 2022 includes the 15th International Trade Fair on Health for All and the 1st International Fair on Medical Tourism and Wellness.
On Tuesday, Dr Ayume and his delegation met with Ugandan students in Cuba and toured the prestigious Latinoamerican Medicine School (ELAM).
The institution has been described as possibly being the largest medical school in the world by enrollment, with approximately 19,550 students from 110 countries as reported in 2013. International mainly come from Latin America and Caribbean as well as Africa and Asia.
It is officially recognized by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and the World Health Organization.
The school, which gives full tuition scholarships, prefers that its students come from the poorest communities with the intent of returning to practice in those areas in their countries.
Uganda has over 100 graduates from the prestigious school.
Ayume and the committee’s visit to Havana, is also aimed at strengthening already existing relations between the two countries.
