Three Soroti District Officials Arrested for Mismanaging UGX 890m

The Police and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit have arrested three Soroti district officials over alleged fraud.

Those arrested are Michael Okello, the Internal Auditor, Simon Okanya, the Principal Human Resource Officer, and Oonyu Charles Human Resource Officer.

It is alleged that the suspects inflated the costs for the construction of Adamasiko Water Supply System/ Project in Oculoi Sub County and embezzled more than 390 million shillings.

The three are also accused of mismanaging and manipulating Soroti district local government payroll by paying ghost workers to the tune of 500 million shillings.

Oscar Gregg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman said in a statement that some of the officials have been paraded to court on Thursday morning.

Ageca added that the Police are conducting further investigations into the matter. He also revealed that the team is investigating similar cases in Kalaki and Kumi districts.

In Kalaki District, the Police and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit are investigating the alleged embezzlement of about 350 million shillings by the Kalaki district officials which resulted in shoddy works of a road and bridge which connects Kalaki to Alebtong Districts.

In Kumi, the officers are investigating a case of alleged mismanagement of 300 million shillings meant for the Parish Development Model (PDM) funds.
