LDC Gets New Management Committee Ahead of Graduation

1 Mins read

The Law Development Center- LDC has got a new management committee following the postponement of graduation last month.

The eight-member management Committee is a critical part of LDC’s Governance structure that is provided for under the LDC Act,1970.

One of its key roles is to approve results. The term of the old management committee expired in May this year.

On Tuesday morning, the LDC Public Relations Officer, Frank Obonyo released a list of the new management committee members appointed by the Attorney General.

The committee is led by Justice Paul Kahibale Mugamba as the Chairperson. The members are John Patrick Adar, Joanita Gertrude Bushara, and Simon Peter Kinobe. Justice Mugamba is a serving member of the Supreme court since 2017.

These join the solicitor general, permanent secretary Ministry of Education and Sports, Principal  Law School Makerere University, and the Director LDC. The team will serve for two years as per the LDC Act, which term is subject to renewal.

While no graduation date has been communicated as yet, provisional results awaiting confirmation by the management committee have been released.

The provisional results for the academic year 2020/2021 indicate that 1,399 out of 1,769 students who sat exams passed the bar course.

This is in contrast to last year where only 145 out of the 1,474 who sat examinations passed the bar course. Obonyo attributes the remarkable improvement to the full reopening of the economy, which restored normal academic operations.

“The performance has improved because we are now operating normally as opposed to the last two years when the country was in lockdown,” he said. In addition, Obonyo said that the institution had an internal assessment to see that students are taught and given more attention as they deserved following public concerns.

LDC is mandated to provide legal education to lawyers and non-lawyers, undertake research on topical legal issues, contribute to legal reforms, produce legal publications, teaching materials, and law reports, and also provide community legal services.
