Police have confirmed four people injured and one dead in a shooting incident in Kyengera town along Masaka road in Wakiso district.
Trouble reportedly started when a machete holding man suspected to be mentally ill, blocked the road, while threatening to hack anyone who dared come close to him.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire has identified the suspect as Geoffrey Kitaka, a boda-boda rider at Wakimese estate stage, who staged a roadblock near Hash petrol station in Kyengera at around 10:00am.
The suspect who had started pouring fuel in the road, was intercepted by a yet to be identified armed motorist, who tried to reason with Kitaka but in vain, prompting him to shoot in the air.
However, during the scuffle, Kitaka cut him and disarmed him.
Some other people sustained injuries from stray bullets, upon Police response in efforts to disarm the now armed Kitaka.
Among the victims is an unidentified female mobile money attendant who has succumbed to a gunshot wound on arrival at Mulago hospital.
Owoyesigyire says a team of detectives on the scene are still trying to find out whether the victim succumbed to gunshots from a responding police officers’ gun or the gun Kitaka was firing.
The suspect who was also shot in the leg by police is currently being treated on handcuffs at Mulago causality, with two other victims.
Police said Kitaka will be subjected to a mental check to ascertain whether the suspect is mentally ill.
“Officers have been dispatched to Kitaka’s residence to get more facts and upon conclusion of the investigations, he may be charged with murder and attempted murder,” Owoyesigire said.
