We Welcome US Sanctions On Kandiho — Bobi Wine

1 Mins read

National Unity Platform president, Robert Sentamu Kyagulanyi who is famously known as Bobi Wine has said that they welcome the sanctions slapped on CMI boss Maj Gen Abel Kandiho.

“The CMI headed by Maj. Gen. Kandiho has presided over the most vile human rights violations. They’ve abducted, tortured and murdered Ugandans with impunity. Financial sanctions are welcome. Just one step. #DictatorMuseveni and his cronies will account for the atrocities,” reads the tweet from Bobi Wine.

He further tweeted that; “This sends a clear message that #DictatorMuseveni’s regime enforcer will have to account for the atrocities commitment against our people. CMI, SFC, ISO, Military Police, LDU, Crime Preventers & Crime Intelligence have led the abductions, torture & murder in the name of Museveni.”

Bobi Wine is Uganda’s leading opposition figure who failed to win the presidency in the 2021 elections.

The U.S. Treasury Department says they slapped charges on the general over alleged human rights abuses committed under his watch.

The US department of treasury had this to say on Maj Gen Abel Kandiho.

REPRESSION IN UGANDA: ABEL KANDIHO

As commander of the Ugandan Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI), Major General Abel Kandiho (Kandiho) and other CMI officers have arrested, detained, and physically abused persons in Uganda.

The CMI targeted individuals due to their nationality, political views, or critique of the Ugandan government.

Individuals were taken into custody and held, often without legal proceedings, at CMI detention facilities where they were subjected to horrific beatings and other egregious acts by CMI officials, including sexual abuse and electrocutions, often resulting in significant long-term injury and even death.

During these incarcerations, victims were kept in solitary confinement and unable to contact friends, family, or legal support.

In some cases, Kandiho was personally involved, leading interrogations of detained individuals.

Kandiho is designated pursuant to E.O. 13818 for being a foreign person who is or has been a leader or official of an entity that has engaged in, or whose members have engaged in, serious human rights abuse relating to his tenure.
