Kadaga Camp On Tenterhooks As Ssemujju Joins Race For Speaker

1 Mins read

Kira Municipality Legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has plunged himself in the murky waters of the race for the speakership.

Ssemujju on Tuesday morning, declared his intention to contest for the office of the Speaker of Parliament in the 11th Parliament.

He will contest against incumbent Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga and Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah.

The news of Ssemujju joining the race will not be received as good news by the Kadaga camp who analysts say had hoped to garner the support of opposition lawmakers.

Ssemujju’s inclusion in the race means he will take a sizeable chunk of Kadaga’s support in the opposition.

This means she has to work extra hard to woo her ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party colleagues to her side.

Elections for the position are expected in May.

Ssemujju also serves as opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party spokesperson and opposition chief whip in the 10th parliament.

Over the past weekend, Acholi Parliamentary Group announced that it was throwing it’s weight behind Oulanyah.
