A section of lawmakers are proposing the abolishment of Resident District Commissioners (RDCs), arguing that it is wasteful expenditure.
“We want ministers to be appointed from professionals and not from among members of parliament. We also need to save money by abolishing positions of RDCs. This is wasteful expenditure as these duplicate roles,” Wamai Wamanga said.
RDCs are appointed by the president and one of their roles includes monitoring and inspecting the activities of local governments and where necessary advise the chairperson.
They also Carry out other functions as may be assigned by the president or prescribed by parliament.
The proposal to abolish the office of RDCs is part of the Constitution (amendment) bill, 2019 that is being debated in parliament.
