EC Suspends Campaigns In Cities Over COVID-19

The Electoral Commission Uganda has suspended physical campaigns in cities and towns of Uganda due to the spiking cases of COVID-19.

“The EC has suspended campaign meetings in districts/cities categorised by Ministry of Health as having high spread of Covid19,” reads the tweet by Paul Bukenya, the acting spokesperson of Electoral Commission.

The tweet further reads that; “From 26/12/20, no campaign meetings will be held in Mbarara, Kabarole, Luwero, Kasese, Masaka, Wakiso, Kabarole, Jinja, Kalungu, Kazo, Kampala & Tororo.”

This website understands that as of 24 December 2020, Uganda had cumulative confirmed cases at 33,360 and 245 deaths.

The breakdown of the new cases on 24th December are;

442 contacts and alerts: Kampala (353), Wakiso (26), Mukono (19), Soroti (8), Mbale (8), Masaka (6), Tororo (5), Kyotera (3), Budaka (3), Lira (3), Amuru (1), Kibuku (1), Busia (1), Namayingo (1), Kween (1), Luwero (1), Mbarara (1), Jinja (1)

4 Truck Drivers: Malaba (3), Elegu (1).

It is not clear when the suspension will be uplifted.
