Uganda Police Force has revealed that Fika Salama operations on main highways will resume ahead of the festive season.
This was revealed by CP Bazil Mugisha the Ag Director Traffic and Road safety while addressing the media today at Uganda Media Centre.
“It is Christmas season and soon it will be New Year’s Day. Traffic flow will be heavy as people travel to their villages to celebrate while others will be doing business,” said Bazil.
He added that; “This season is characterized by excitement leading to recklessness on the road.
“The Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety will revamp Fika Salama checkpoints and will target the following: –
“Speeding, reckless and careless driving offences that are largely responsible for road carnage.
“Incompetent drivers.
“Driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
“Vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition.
“Boda bola riders who flout traffic regulations.
“Those who flout COVID 19 SOPs while on the road.
“Checkpoints will be mounted at specific locations along the highways and they will be manned 24 hours.
Handling of offenders
• All offenders committing serious offences will be taken to court.
• The offence of failing to stop and obstructing police officers will attract automatic detention.
• All offenders who flout COVID 19 SOPs should be handled over to CID for prosecution.
Enforcement of these guidelines will be in accordance to the Traffic and Road Safety Act 1998.”
