Mastercard Foundation Contributes Shs3.7billion To The Reconstruction Of Makerere’s Ivory Tower

Mastercard Foundation has announced a USD 1 Million (UGX 3.7 Billion) contribution towards the restoration of the Makerere University’s Ivory Tower.

The remarks were made by President of Mastercard Foundation, Dr. Reeta Roy in a letter to Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe

“I was saddened to learn about the fire at Makerere University and the extensive damage to the iconic main building. Thankfully, there were no injuries or loss of life,” read the letter dated September 25th, 2020.

“You do not need more challenges at a time you are leading the university and your teams through a global pandemic and as well as preparing to receive medical and final year students in mid-October. Our hearts go out to you.

“We understand that the efforts to repair and rebuild as well as recover records are considerable.

“To assist with these efforts, the Foundation would like to provide a USD $1 million in support to Makerere University.

“We hope this contribution expedites the reopening of the university and builds resiliency as Makerere continues to educate our future leaders.

It should be noted that On September 20, 2020 a fire outbreak at Makerere University Main building that started at around midnight.

The fire is believed to have started from the roof spreading to floors that house both records and finance departments.

Alot of property was destroyed.

Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and several officers have been quizzed.
