Kampala businessman Mathew Kanyamunyu has admitted to have shot social worker Kenneth Akena who later died at Norvic hospital along Bombo Road in 2016.
Kanyamumyu revealed this on Friday afternoon as he had gone to Acholi land for cleansing and reconciliation purposes.
During the Mato Oput session, Kanyamumyu narrated to the elders on how the events unfolded on that fateful day.
He said that up to now he has not come to terms with what exactly happened and he doesn’t know if he will ever come to terms with it.
“To be honest I would be lying to you if I told you that I have fully comprehended the tragedy of that day to date,” said Kanyamunyu before adding that;
“The stupidity, the foolishness, the evil that I exhibited on that day is not something I knew was in.
“But now I recognize, now I recognize within me, deep within me, there is evil that I did not know about.”
“I can never comprehend ever the magnitude of what is inside me and that is the reason that I’m remorseful, that I’m sorry and that is the reason I ask for your forgiveness.
“I ask for your understanding and for time for this healing process to begin and for time for me to comprehend the magnitude of the tragedy.”
As part of the reconciliation process, Kanyamunyu agreed to pay 10 cows and three goats to the family of slain Kenneth Akena.
It should be noted that prosecution alleges that on November 12, 2016, Matthew, Munwangari, Joseph and other accomplices still at large, while on Kampala- Jinja Road near Malik Car Bond, opposite Uganda Manufacturers Association offices in Nakawa Division murdered Akena.
The trio, who are out on bail, were committed to the High Court for trial in January 2017.
The summary of evidence presented by the Director of Public Prosecutions says there is sufficient proof of murder against the trio.
However, Joseph Kanyamunyu was separately indicted on an additional charge of being an accessory after commission of the offence.
