As the NRM prepares for the party primaries tomorrow, the former Kampala Central Division Mayor Godfrey Nyakana has withdrawn from the race to hold the NRM flag in the Kampala Lord mayoral race.
The development was confirmed by Dr Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson.
“Honourable Nyakana has written to the Commission withdrawing his candidature from Kampala Mayoral race over personal reasons,” said Odoi.
Nyakana was warming up to battle with Dan Kazibwe, aka Ragga Dee, Bogere Masembe and Ssebaana Kizito for the post.
Nyakana was earlier beaten in the contest for NRM CEC Vice Chairperson Central.
The 2021 Kampala mayoral race is headed for a tighter contest with Kampala District Woman MP Nabilah Naggayi, former lord mayor Nasser Sebaggala, and local artiste Joseph Mayanja, aka Jose Chameleone, entering the ring to outfox the incumbent, Mr Erias Lukwago.
However, Former presidential spokesperson Tamale Mirundi said Lukwago remains a strong force as he continues to ride on his voice against harassment of city dwellers, human rights abuses and corruption by government officials to tighten his grip on the electorate.
“Lukwago has paraded himself as a pro-people leader who fights for them during evictions and human rights abuses. He has a better advantage,” Mr Mirundi said.
According to the NRM electoral roadmap, city lord mayors and city mayor elections will be held on Sept 11
