Police in Kampala has arrested over 20 Boda Boda cyclists and several motorcycles after a demonstration in Kampala.
The chaos broke out at clock tower, Katwe and in Kibuye, in the city centre.
This happened as police battled boda-boda riders protesting the impounding of their motorcycles.
The police had mounted an operation to net riders not who were not observing COVID-19 standard operating procedures.
According to the Kampala metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Oweyesigire, the operation of arresting riders who have become complacent to COVID-19 guidelines is ongoing.
“We urged boda boda riders out there that the act of riding beyond the stipulated time is illegal,” he said.
Oweyesigire said the force tightened the operation after understanding that most of the boda boda riders were not adhering to COVID-19 guidelines.
“We tightened our operations after getting to know that COVID-19 cases were surging. We are getting more cases while others are dying,” he noted.
“We have managed to impound many motorcycles and we have arrested many of these riders. We want to urge them to follow COVID-19 standard operating procedures,” he said.
