LDU Back To Dismantle Criminal Gangs

1 Mins read

Early in July, Local Defence Units were suspended from duty to go and take part in refresher training because there was an increase in cases against their conduct.

Today morning, Ministry of Defense has released a statement signed by the Defence spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Flavia Byekwaso .

In a statement, UPDF has reinstated LDUs effectively because of an increase in crimes especially during the night.

According to the statment many local leaders and the genral public petitioned security leaders to return LDUs to do their duties.

LDUs who have finished the refresher training will resume operations together with UPDF to curb criminal activities in the night.

They will also take part in intelligence led operations on specific targets with the support of the Uganda Police.

However, LDUs shall not take part in any day times duties so all their work shall be done in the night.

By the time LDUs were recalled to go for refresher training, there had been a series of compalints about abuse of human rights by the forces ranging from murder to assault, to many other complaints.

Their return to the public after the refresher training should hopefully cause a change in their conduct towards the public.
