LDUs Set to Undergo More Specialised Training in Operations

The local defence unit (LDU) has been in the spotlight for a number of issues including mishandling and killing of innocent people among other crimes in recent times.

Recently a trigger happy Local Defense Unit (LDU) personnel shot dead a boda boda rider as he attempted to transport a pregnant woman on his motorcycle.

Such action has been condemned by the public and human rights activists while others are demanding that the LDU should be suspended.

But while addressing the media in Kampala, The LDU spokesperson Maj Bilal Katamba regretted the actions of some of these officers noting that their men work on standing operating orders.

He said that LDUs are always breifed before the operation and those who operates against the command will be apprehended and duly punished.

“We condemned in the strongest terms the actions of those individuals security personnel whether LDU or UPDF among others that keep on doing such great mistakes,” he said.

He noted that there is plan to make these LDUs undergo more training to supplement their military based training in carrying out lawful operations.

“There are specialised training that we are organizing for examples that of intelligence, investigation and that of operation, so we are going to give them more training,” he said.

He noted that when these officers are deployed for operation, some personnel reserve right to disobey unlawfully orders.

“So when you give a wrongful order. For example when you are told Kill or beat.ask yourself whether it is a lawful order. And if something goes wrong both of u are charged,” he said.
