NIRA Set to Distribute Over 150,00 Identity Cards in Wakiso

1 Mins read

The National Identification Registration Authority-NIRA has finalized arrangements to distribute over 150,000 national identification cards to Wakiso residents who had failed to collect them by the beginning of the lockdown.

The exercise has been greatly affected due to the outbreak of covid19 that frustrated many businesses across the country  since big crowds can be a risk factor to the spread of the pandemic.

The distribution exercise, which is scheduled to start as soon as possible  will take place at selected centers in the district and run until July 24th.

In a letter to the Resident District Commissioner, Rose Kirabira, the Authority explains that the issuance of the IDs had been halted because of the Covid19 prevention measures but this time standard operating procedures will be observed to ensure the smooth running of the exercise.

According to NIRA, the exercise is intended to reduce congestion at its offices once they reopen for the public and social distancing will be strictly observed in addition to other ministry of health guidelines.

Kirabira said the exercise will only benefit those who had already registered for the National Identity cards and not fresh applicants. She advised fresh applicants to wait until the situation normalises as the country continues to battle with the pandemic.
