The popular Ethiopian singer and activist, Hachalu Hundessa, has been shot dead in the capital, Addis Ababa.
He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries shortly afterwards.
The prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, expressed his condolences, saying Mr Hundessa had been a “marvellous” performer.
The songs of the 34-year-old, promoting freedom and rights for his Oromo ethnic group, were popular during the years of protests over the past decade.
Police say they have detained several suspects.
There is concern that his killing could trigger unrest in a country already suffering from ethnic violence.
