The UPDF Commander Land Forces Lt General Peter Elwelu has appealed to Soldiers to abide by the guidelines put in place by the government so as to join the struggle in fighting COVID-19 pandemic.
In March, the government through the Ministry of Health put in out several messages to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country. Some of these measures included a ban on public gatherings, social distancing, wearing face masks, advising citizens to wash their hands with soap or sanitizing among others measures.
While delivering a lecture of opportunity at a three week Political Education Course on Tuesday at Peace Support Operation – Training Center Singo, Lt General Elweru reminded the soldiers that there is need to follow the standard operating procedures so as to avoid the spread of the disease amongst the population.
He noted that although Uganda hasn’t registered any COVID-19 related deaths, if the trainees take the measures given by the government for granted, Uganda may face severe challenges as it goes into stage three of the pandemic.
He advised the trainees who attentively listened to him to maintain good discipline and to do as health experts and the government backed by the Commander in Chief of the Armed forces, Gen. Yoweri Museveni say.
He asked the trainees who have since been kept inside the training facility with restrictions on movements to maintain discipline, unity, comradeship and teamwork as they await for their deployment in mission areas.
“One thing you need to know is that while you are in mission areas, you are there representing our country. You are like ambassadors. Therefore, I call upon you to desist from acts that will let our flag down,” Gen. Elwelu concluded.
