While speaking on a local TV station earlier today, Hon Ssewungu Joseph Gonzaga, of Kalungu District who also doubles as the DP chief whip said that he would not return the Shs20m that was given to parliamentarians to support their communities in the fight against Coronavirus.
“I have not returned and I will not return the UGX 20 million,” he said.
This comes at a time when the high court in Uganda under Justice Micheal Elubu ordered Members of Parliament (MPs) to return the Shs 20m that they ha allocated themselves off the budget to fight the Coronavirus.
The court’s ruling followed a miscellaneous application No.179 of 2020 filed by Ntungamo Municipality MP Gerald Karuhanga and Erute South MP, Jonathan Odur against the Parliamentary Commission and the Attorney General.
The petitioners argued that Parliament had irregularly allocated over Shs10Bn to the Parliamentary Commission while passing the Shs304Bn COVID-19 supplementary budget.
This also comes after the refusal by Members of Parliament from Moroto to donate 20 million shillings to the district COVID-19 taskforce has angered district leaders.
John Baptist Lokii, the MP for Matheniko County and Stella Atyang, the Moroto District Woman MP informed the District COVID-19 taskforce that they will not hand over the money to the district.
