Swarms of locusts reach Uganda; food panic rises

1 Mins read

Locusts entered Uganda on Sunday through Amudat district in Karamoja sub region. They moved from North West Pokot in Kenya where they had done a great damage. The locusts have been destroyed a big part of Kenya’s farm produce over the previous weeks.

These desert locusts move in large groups and destroy any green cover in sight. They move in about 2 million a swarm and take about 2 weeks to mature to full age.

Government is holding crisis meetings on how to prevent the damage that these locusts might create in Uganda. Meetings have also been held earlier in preparation for the hazard and motorized sprayers on pickups and tractors have been moved to the region to control the movement of the locusts  to other parts of the country. lsdu
