The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has called upon security agencies to have the will of fighting the increasing crime in the country.
While addressing the media at the party headquarters in Kampala, the FDC, spokesperson Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda tasked the government to explain why despite the huge investment in security, murders are continuing unabated in the country.
“Just last week a 22-year Steven Ssemugonde was murdered and abandoned just outside his house in Kira a few meters from the Local Defence Unit (LDU) detach and Police,” he said
He said because of the proximity of the murder scene to the LDU and Police detach, residents fear that the murder could have been committed by the LDUs.
He noted that there was a report in the newspapers and on social media of the murder of Mr. Ahmed Kahuma, proprietor of AHH Industrial Holdings that deals in gold and other minerals.
“These two murders follow the shooting of a Kyambogo University student who was hurriedly buried in Bukasa and of course of several other murders,” he said.
He added that Uganda police reported 4,307 murders in their annual report which means 12 people are being killed in Uganda every day.
“If you divide the murders that happened in 2018 by the number of days in a year, it means 12 people are being murdered in Uganda every single day where is the police? where are these LDUs?” he asked.
He noted that the government owes the country an explanation over the escalating criminality in different parts of the country.
“Security alone will consume nearly five trillion of the taxpayers’ money this financial year. the budget of the security and defence sector rose nearly a quarter of Uganda’s budget, nearly six trillion,” he said.
He said this financial year Uganda is going to spend more than Shs3trillion on classified expenditure.
“The expenditure which you and I don’t know, the budget of defence itself its now Shs5trillion including the Shs3trillion for classified expenditure, the one of police went to Shs1.2trillion so nearly we are going to spend Shs7trillion on security,” he said.
