The Assistant Commissioner for private schools in the Ministry of Education, George Mutekanga has called upon all the private and public schools to put emphasis co-curricular activities so that appropriate skills are installed in the children.
“As the Ministry of Education and Sports we are first of all very proud of public schools that are able to organise co-curricular activities,” he said.
He noted that co-curricular activities with academics develop different skills beyond knowledge of subjects and can help to improve teaching techniques at school.
He said every activity in school plays a significant role in the development of students and children and are essential part of school life that helps in enhancing learning processes.
“Co-curricular activities promote neutral teaching and learning and also support the actual teaching where we emphasize knowledge, skills, values and attitudes,” he added.
He also noted that if schools embark in encouraging their students to participate in such activities, it would promote the entertainment and tourisms sector and offer jobs to the youth, partially addressing the long-term unemployment problem in Uganda.
He noted that when a child has been spotted with some knowledge and is able to participate and practice such skills is better and that’s the way to go.
“We have to look at the skills of the hands, child’s ability to dance, sing and to compose plays, drama and that’s very important,” he said.
