International Albinism Awareness Day was celebrated across the world and the report to enhance equality, countering discrimination against persons with albinism in Uganda was launched on Thursday showing different forms of discrimination.
Uganda joined the celebrations at Grand Imperial Hotel in Kampala where the report that was launched.
It indicates that the persons living with albinism are discriminated socially, academically, economically and politically.
Persons living with albinism noted that in their daily life, they encounter social, economic and environment challenges that occur from superstition, stereotype, myth and ignorance about Albinism.
They said discrimination begins from birth where fathers deny children born with albinism and abandon them in the care of their mothers.
Some of the recommendations in the report is to create awareness among the public so that people are well acquainted with conditions under which albinos face.
The report also indicates that the government pays little or no attention to persons with albinism.
Hassan Mulondo the chairperson Uganda Association for persons with albinism urged the government to consider albinos in the budget so that they are in position to enjoy their freedom.
“Actually, we agitate for the legislators and those who are going be involved in this budget conference to assist us and increase the health budget,” he noted.
He said it will be irrelevant if the government talks more about albinism and do not add more money in health sector more especially health issues affecting the person with albinism.
He added that lack of awareness about albinism has made many parents abandon their children.
Albinism is a genetic condition got at birth due to lack of melanin.
