Following the sad incident that befell Ssebulime’s family, the family Lawyers of Muwada and Company Advocates have on Tuesday 2nd April 2019 penned a letter to Inspector General of Police, Martin Okoth Ochola showing concern about the police’s refusal and failure to arrest the state Minister for IT Hon Idah Nantaba.
Uganda Police summoned Hon Idah Nantaba on March, 25th, to record a statement about the death of Ssebulime who was gunned down by police as he was suspected to be trailing the Minister on March 24th.
However, on 29th March, Nantaba wrote a letter to the Criminal Investigations Department stating that she was not in position to get to the police station because president Museveni had ordered her to remain at her home until further instructions.
On the same note Uganda Police came out and told the public that they could not carry on with probe into the matter due to the statement that was written by Hon Idah Nantaba however, promised to take further steps to handle the matter with more assistance and clarification from the President’s office.
In the statement, the Muwada and company advocates states that Hon Nantaba requires no clearance in law to appear at the police station.
They stated that the president can only pardon after conviction but cannot obstruct the course of criminal justice.
They also called upon the general public to apprehend Hon Idah Nantaba and hand her to the nearest police station.
They further added that the law of this country do allow permit the general public or any private person to execute the arrest of such people to face the law.
“Notify you as IGP that unless you usurp your statutory powers and act as required by the law, we shall without prejudice prosecute you Martin Okoth Ochola as the commanding officer, the four police officers and Hon Idah Nantaba”
They added that Ssebulime’s family need Justice because police came out and admitted that their officer killed an innocent person and that they were provided with false information.
They said it’s the right time for the law to take its course and Hon Nantaba should go to police and make a statement so that investigations into the matter can kick off.
