Kyegegwa District needs at least Shs10billion to tackle the wide challenge of water scarcity.
The Kyegegwa District Water Engineer, Christopher Katusabe on Wednesday said that safe water coverage in the district stands at 30 percent with most residents still walking a distance of up to 10kilometers in search of water.
Katusabe noted that the major cause of water scarcity is the very low water table, which has barred them from using water springs and gravity schemes that would have been cheaper alternatives.
“The main challenge we are facing is low water table in this area,” he said
He observed that they currently receive Shs460million each financial year to sink boreholes, which is too little to make any impact.
“We need about Shs10billion to tackle water shortage in this area but we currently receive Shs460 million each financial year which is not enough,” he stated
Katusabe says they need at least Shs10billion to put in place a number of production boreholes, which have capacity to serve many areas and at a low cost.
He says currently it takes them about four years to complete one production borehole because of the meagre funding.
