In 2015 government closed a section of Mulago national referral hospital and directed patients use Kiruddu, Kawempe and Naguru hospitals to pave way to the renovation of a specialized hospital that meets international hospital standards.
The contractors’ local contraction has since consumed all the money and works have stalled.
“As we speak now, the renovation of Mulago hospital is about 91 percent complete however it had stalled because of lack of funds,” Sarah Opendi, Minister of Health stated.
Ug Mirror has established that Ministry of Health has requested for Shs34 billion to complete the hospital in order to meet international standards.
“They require $9million for them be able to complete the remaining work, this is what we are waiting for from the Ministry Of Finance and if this money can be availed then we hope that by June we should be done by the renovation of Mulago specialized hospital so that it can commence providing services to the Ugandans.
She further added that the country has qualified health professionals however facilities are not provided for them to practice and provided health services to the population.
Minister Opendi said that once the specialized hospital is completed, it will offer services such as Kidney transplant, surgery and many others which Ugandans were seeking abroad.
“We are talking of a facility that will accommodate over 2000 patients; the heart institute definitely will be using our facility before they get their own,” she explained
She added that there are also oxygen pipes which have been not completed yet they necessary and the intensive care unit is also not yet completed.
The ministry of health has already submitted its supplementary budget to the ministry of finance subject to the approval by parliament
