Officials from the Office of the Prime Minister have given an update on the first phase of the house construction meant to house the victims of the Bududa landslide victims.
The program was launched on the 24th of January by Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda after the move was given green light by both the Parliament and Cabinet.
The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces and Uganda Police construction units are in charge of constructing the houses.
Candia Martin, the UPDF foreman confirms that the houses will be completed in three weeks and noted that the shortage of water supply had initially delayed the work.
“We are doing the floor; we are doing final finishing and after doing those final finishes, we shall start painting,” Candia stated.
Apart from constructing houses, Julius Mucunguzi from the Office of the Prime Minister noted the that government also intends to construct facilities like hospitals, schools and other social amenities.
“Water, sanitation, schools and health care are in place,” Julius Mucunguzi from the office of the Prime Minster stated.
According Julius Mucunguzi the Office of the Prime Minister intends to construct 900 houses in three phases and they plan to relocate over 600 on the 2868-acre land which government bought.
“When this first phase is completed fully, the next step is going to be organizing and proper reallocation,” Julius added
However, John Baptist Nambeshe the Member of Parliament for Manjiya County said that the Office of the Prime Minister has yet to inform people that the land they will leave behind will be reverted into government use.
“That property or land the moment you accept to be taken to Bulambuli to be resettled, that land or whatever reverts into the hand of government, you no longer have right on that land or property.”
