Former embattled Makerere University researcher Dr Stella Nyanzi’s case has been adjourned to February 19th 2019 after both university and her lawyer failed to produce the required documents.
Nyanzi who looked frail with shaved hair appeared before Justice Lydia Mugambe of the high Court for the hearing of a case she filed against the university for refusing to pay her wages and failure to reinstate her on her job as directed by university tribunal.
Dr Nyanzi explained to high Court judge that she had recently suffered from miscarriage while in the prison and had been admitted to the prison’s sick bay and failed to get in touch with her lawyer Isaac Ssemakadde to swear a supporting affidavit in her case.
In October 2018 Makerere tribunal directed that Dr Stella Nyanzi be reinstated and be paid all her salaries and also promoted to the level of a research fellow with immediate effect after lifting her supension however the University failed to abide by the order then Dr Nyanzi sued the institution seeking payment of her salaries, be reinstated as directed by the staff tribunal.
Dr Stella Nyanzi was among the over 40 staff who were sacked by the University on various reasons which include sexual harassment, insubordination, absconding from duty among others.
But the case of Dr Stella Nyanzi was dismissed on the ground that her contract expired and was unable to renew the contract.
Dr Stella Nyanzi is currently remanded at Luzira prison since November 2018 on charges of cyber harassment and offensive communication.
On Wednesday the court adjourned the hearing of her case till next month on February 19th 2019.
