After three days of nonstop strikes at Makerere University, the administration has finally succumbed to pressure and suspended the new fees policy.
“This is to inform you that following consultations with the Chairperson Makerere University Council, it has been agreed that the new fees on selected programmes in the College of Health Sciences (CHS), College Veterinary Medicine and Bio Security (COVAB), and College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHUSS) be suspended until consultations are made with the Students Guild for their input,” reads the letter signed by Makerere university Vice Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe.
“This is, therefore, to inform you that the new proposed fees are suspended until these consultations are concluded.”
Nawangwe thanked the students’ guild for maximum cooperation in resolving the issue.
“I thank the Guild President, Speaker, Prime Minister and the entire GRC for their cooperation during the consultative meeting we have had today. Together, we have returned our university to normal operations,” tweeted Nawangwe before adding that;
“We have agreed to work together to avoid unnecessary riots through constant consultations on issues that affect our students. I call upon all our students to return to their studies & prepare for the forthcoming examinations and I wish everybody success in the examinations.”
Uganda Police political commissar, AIGP Asan Kasingye who was part of the meeting, thanked the Vice Chancellor on how he handled the issue.
“Thank you for the amicable settlement of the standoff at Makerere University. VC, you have my respect in the way you handled the issue. Much respect,” said Kasingye.
He further revealed that Police will remain deployed at the university to ensure maximum security.
