Today, Kampala City council Authority has closed over nine butcheries in Kalerwe and Ntinda over Poor hygiene and use of dangerous chemicals to preserve the meat from going bad.
One of the arrested butcher, claimed that the chemical found in his stall, was a medicine to kill bedbugs and he was taking it home.
“This drug is for bedbugs I have just bought it and I was taking it home, these just found me here as I was going home,” cried the butcher as he was being put on a pickup track.
Dr. Emilian Ahimbisibwe, KCCA’s Supervisor of Animal Production says that the operation is aimed at ensuring that Kampala residents enjoy safe and quality meat.
“Today we said we should start a new year where we are sure the residents of Kampala have safe meat,” he said.
Dr. Ahimbisibwe further observed that most butcheries in Kampala operate in dirty places with untiled floors.
He concluded by saying that the shutdown operation will continue until required standards are met.
