DPP Orders Trial Of COVID-19 Food Swindlers

The anti-corruption court is set to start the trial of 4 officials in the office of the Prime Minister who are accused of inflating food prices for Vulnerable poor in Uganda during the COVID-19 lockdown.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DDP), Jane Frances Abodo ordered anti-corruption court to start the trial process as soon as possible.

The accused officers are, Office of the Prime Minister Permanent Secretary, Guwatudde Christine Kintu, Lutimba Kyeyune, the Head Procurement Unit, Joel Wanjala, the ministry Under Secretary, and Mr Martin Owor, the Commissioner in charge of relief Disaster Preparedness and Head of the COVID-19 Relief Management.

State Attorney James Khaukha said that the that investigations in this scam have been completed and trial can now start.

Khaukha further said that the accused officials face up to 24 charges.

It is however worth noting that in April 2020 while appearing before Buganda Road court, They denied charges of colluding to commit a fraudulent practice in regard to inflating prices for Covid-19 food stuff under the Public Procurement and Disposal Assets Act.

The anti-corruption court Grade One Magistrate Sarah Namusobya said that the trial will take three consecutive days starting from 27th, to 29th October 2020.
