NUP To Sue EC Over Irregularities In Youth Elections

1 Mins read

Bobi Wine’s new party has started to gather evidence which will be used in court to challenge some of theĀ  irregularities that were witnessed in the youth elections.

The statement made by Bobi Wine yesterday comes shortly after different youth across the country elected their leaders at village level although in some areas electionsĀ  wereĀ  stopped because of violence that attracted the intervention of the police to restore calm.

While addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Kampala, Kyagulanyi said these elections were characterized by voter bribery, scrapping voters off the registers, violence among others.Ā “I am so proud of you.Less than a month after unveiling NUP, we won most seats everywhere we had candidates. Where we did not win is where we didn’t front candidates. That’s the lesson for us for the next elections. This is a revolution,”he said.Ā

He said despite the good performance in these elections, the party will go to court to challenge irregularities that were cited duringĀ  the exercise. “This is the first time for the last 34 years for the young people to take interest and part in the youth elections, ” Kyagulanyi added.

Ā According to the spokesperson of the NUP, Joel Ssenyonyi ,the youths elections were largely characterised by chaos and intimidation of dissenting youths saying that some of the results announced by the Electoral Commission don’t reflect what took place.Ā ” There were a number of challenges with these elections and we are following it up.We also have evidence of NRM leaders who were busy giving money to these youth. We are gathering more evidence so that we can use it in the courts of law,” Ssenyonyi said.

Ssenyonyi also said that most of the voters’ registers were tampered with and those who had already crossed checked their names, reached the polling stations only to be told that they won’t vote.Ā “They were told that their names were not in the registers because most of them belong to the opposition. Others their name were changed from one polling station to another, “Ssenyonyi noted.
